Reto Gregori, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Bloomberg News, spoke to ACJ students about the evolving future of journalism, and the growing role of multimedia and artificial intelligence (AI).
He pointed out that news presentation has changed with more multimedia tools being used to tell stories. These tools include podcasts, images, and graphs. The new formats help readers better understand complex topics.
The next big change in newsrooms, he said, was the integration of AI in writing and editing. AI is being utilised to create summaries of news stories for quick reading. The technology is also being used to edit articles.
AI can handle repetitive tasks and report on the 'What,’ but journalists are still needed to explain the 'Why' of a news story, said the deputy editor on the potential replacement of journalists with AI.
He also touched upon the US elections, war reporting in Gaza, and his interview with the RBI Governor in India.
The unprecedented growth of journalism has not changed its core principles, said Gregori. Accuracy, fairness and balance should be prioritised in all newsrooms.
